3-year-old hospitalized, driver arrested in Groton crashes

Groton — An intoxicated man who left the scene of a crash he caused on Drozdyk Drive on Monday evening later crashed into a building on Buddington Road, sending his 3-year-old passenger to the hospital, town police said.

Police said 29-year-old Maxwell V. Nucci of 70 Smith St., Niantic, was driving his Nissan Frontier east on Drozdyk Drive when he crashed into the back of a BMW 328XI that was turning into a driveway.

Crews took the BMW’s driver, 27-year-old Kaitlyn MacPeek of Quaker Hill, to Pequot Medical Center in Groton for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said Nucci continued east and onto Buddington Road, where he failed to negotiate the turn into the Laurel Glen condominium complex and crashed into a tree and then building No. 68.

Police said Nucci was intoxicated and using a cellphone when he crashed about 7:20 p.m.

Crews took Nucci’s 3-year-old passenger to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for a laceration police said was "serious but not life-threatening." Police didn't describe the relationship between driver and passenger.

No one inside the building reported injuries. Police said it did not appear to be structurally damaged.

The Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance and the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit assisted with the crashes.

Police charged Nucci with second-degree assault with a vehicle, risk of injury to a minor, first-degree reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, driving unreasonably fast, driving while using a handheld device, driving while distracted, evading responsibility and following too closely.

Released on a $5,000 bond, Nucci is due Aug. 7 in New London Superior Court.
