    Two Pawcatuck businesses accused of selling tobacco to underage youth

    Stonington — Two Pawcatuck businesses were cited Tuesday by the state Department of Health and Addiction Services’ Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program (TPEP) for allegedly selling tobacco products to those under 18 years of age, which is illegal.

    Legends Smoke Shop at 38 West Broad St. and A to Z Convenience Store at 380 Liberty St. were cited during unannounced checks by local police and TPEP, in which an underaged youth employed by TPEP entered the stores and tried to buy tobacco products. The clerks who sold the tobacco products to the youths were issued $200 infractions while the cigarette dealer license holders at each store face additional sanctions by the Department of Revenue Services.

    Ten other businesses were found to be in compliance by not selling to minors. These included Mystic Food and More, 34 East Main St., Mystic; Grand Wine and Spirits, 25 Broadway, Mystic; Mystic Henny Penny, 2 Roosevelt Ave., Mystic; Chucky’s Shell, 242 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic; Mystic Mobil, 66 Whitehall Ave., Mystic; Stonington Village Foodmart, 522 Stonington Road; Chucky’s Food Store, 60 South Broad St., Pawcatuck; Walgreen’s, 37 South Broad St., Pawcatuck, and Henny Penny, 466 Liberty St., Pawcatuck.
