Deck fire displaces 4 Norwich residents; no injuries reported

Norwich — A deck fire that spread to the 2½-story, two-family apartment building at 152 Broad St. displaced four residents but caused no injuries Thursday morning, city firefighters said.

Firefighters said the 4:47 a.m. fire severely damaged the second-floor rear deck where it started and the adjoining exterior walls. The rest of the structure had smoke damage from the blaze, which was under control by 5:04 a.m.

Firefighters said the four residents evacuated the building before they arrived. The property owner, Homemax LLC, is going to relocate the residents, firefighters said.

Mashantucket Tribal firefighters, Norwich police, Norwich Public Utilities and the city Building Department were on scene, while the East Great Plain and Yantic volunteer departments were on standby should another incident arise in the city.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
