New London — New London firefighters assisted city police in recovering a toy gun Wednesday from the waters of Alewife Cove under the bridge between New London and Waterford.

A passer-by had spotted the toy and police decided to recover the item to be sure it was not a real gun.

Firefighters in cold water immersion suits lifted the plastic toy out with a crabbing net.
