Man charged with assaulting woman with broken bed post in Mystic

Mystic _ A New York man was arrested Friday night after Stonington police say he tried to stab and choke a woman with a broken piece of bed post at the Inn at Mystic.

Michael S. Webb, 36, of Parish, N.Y. was charged with second-degree assault, strangulation, second-degree breach of peace and second-degree criminal mischief. He was held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Monday.

Police said they were responded to a report of a disturbance in guest room at the inn on Route 1 just before 7 p.m. They said they located the victim, a woman, in an adjacent room with non life threatening injuries, which they described as abrasions on her chest and neck. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Although Webb had fled from the inn, police were able to identify him and his vehicle after speaking to the victim and witnesses. Police determined the assault occurred in a room directly across from where they found the woman. They said the room was in complete disarray, with blood splatter around the room, heavy damage to furniture and items thrown around.

The found a section of a bed post had been broken off and had a sharpened end. Police said they determined the broken bed post was likely used a weapon against the woman. They said Webb tried to stab the victim with the bed post and also used it and his hands to try and strangle her.

Police said they searched for Webb for a few hours. At that time, they returned to the room and found him in a hallway. He was taken in custody without incident. Police said the blood in the room was from a significant laceration Webb has sustained a few days earlier and which he aggravated during the disturbance. They said the woman’s injuries were not consistent with the amount of blood in the room.
