Police arrest 5, expect more in Foxwoods brawl

Mashantucket — Tribal police have arrested five people and expect to arrest more in a New Year’s Day brawl at Foxwoods Resort Casino that left three people with stab wounds.

Police said the large fight began in the Fox Tower Garage about 1:10 a.m. and spilled into the casino.

Chief William Dittman said three people had stab wounds. One refused treatment at the scene, one was treated and released from The William W. Backus Hospital and the other was airlifted to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries.

Dittman said he believed the latter remained hospitalized with stable vital signs Friday afternoon.

Dittman, who said police also responded to three crashes and an overdose on New Year's Eve, said he didn’t know the victims' names because officers hadn’t finished their reports.

Immediately after the fight, police charged Ronald Whitfield Jr., 26, of 20 Concord Court, Groton, and Dante E. Johnson, 21, of 232 Broad St., New London, with breach of peace.

Charged with breach of peace and interfering with an officer were Yaseen Dalil Dannett, 19, of 172 Shaw St., New London; Elijah Clinton Rivera, 20, of 45 Connecticut Ave., New London, and Kwane R. Baines, 21, of 2 Hunters Ave., Norwich.

Dittman said those involved in the fight didn’t appear to be patrons of the casino and will be permanently ejected from it.

“We’re always concerned about the safety of our patrons,” he said.

    The investigation is active.
