Red Cross helps person displaced after New London fire

New London — The American Red Cross is helping a woman after fire broke out in her 239 Nautilus Drive apartment Thursday afternoon, according to the Red Cross and the New London Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched at 3:30 p.m. for a fire that was contained to a bathroom, and the fire marshal is investigating how it started, Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said.

"The rest of the apartment was covered in soot and heat damage, so that's why the Red Cross was called, to help her find a new place to stay," he added. Nichols said there were no injuries.

The Red Cross said in a media statement that it "provided assistance to meet the family's immediate needs," and is providing comfort kits with toothbrushes, deodorant and other items. It also provided tips on cleanup and dealing with damaged items.
