Norwich fire marshals investigating two unrelated Greeneville blazes

Norwich — City fire marshals continue to investigate two unrelated fires that happened in the Greeneville section of town over the weekend, Chief Tracy Montoya said.

Montoya said the first fire, which began on a second-floor porch at 53 Convent Ave., was called in at 1:51 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters found heavy smoke surrounding the occupied, multi-family home, but quickly extinguished the flames.

No one was injured, Montoya said.

The second blaze, which investigators said was intentionally set, happened at 42 Prospect St. around 9:10 a.m. Sunday. That fire began on the back side of the multifamily home. Montoya said investigators do not believe the fires are related.

Four adults and four children safely escaped the Prospect Street home and were relocated with help from the American Red Cross.

Montoya said one firefighter received a minor hand injury while fighting the blaze.

Anyone with information about the arson can call detectives at (860) 886-5561, Ext. 7, or Deputy Fire Marshal Marl Gilot at (860) 887-2780. Callers also can use the police department's anonymous tip line at (860) 886-5561, Ext. 4.
