Police to increase DUI, seatbelt, speeding enforcement for Memorial Day weekend

With Memorial Day weekend bringing increased traffic and seasonal celebrations, local police departments are ramping up their enforcement of those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Norwich police will have DUI sobriety checkpoints at Route 2/Washington Street, Route 32, and Route 82/West Main Street, the department said in a news release. They will take place Sunday evening through Monday morning, between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Norwich police said they also will "be aggressively conducting traffic enforcement consisting of DUI Patrols and regular traffic enforcement."

The only checkpoints Connecticut state police announced are in New Haven and Colchester. But on Friday and Saturday, there will be roving DUI patrols in the region from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., and state troopers will use laser units for speed enforcement.

State police said in a news release that over Memorial Day weekend last year, they arrested 38 drunk drivers, charged 909 drivers with speeding and issued 396 seat belt violations. Of the 313 motor vehicle accidents investigated, one resulted in a fatality.

State police also reminded people to obey speed limits, not follow too close, stay off the cellphone while driving, slow down when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle and buckle up. Police departments nationwide started a "Click it or Ticket" campaign for buckling up on May 20, which will run through June 2.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10,076 people whose seat belts weren't buckled in passenger vehicles died in crashes across the country in 2017.
