New London police investigating attempts to engage students from vehicles

New London — New London police are seeking the public's help as they investigate at least three reports of a man attempting to engage female students from a vehicle over the last two weeks.

Police in a news release Friday night said the three incidents potentially could involve "the same male suspect in different vehicles" attempting to initiate contact with female students, two of them juveniles.

The first report came from a juvenile student walking near Jennings School about 7 a.m. May 20. The student said a light-skinned, possibly Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s, bald with a long goatee, tried to speak with her from his older black car with tinted windows parked near Williams Street. The male allegedly asked her to come over to his car so he could ask her a question.

About 10:30 a.m. three days later, a female New London Public School student reported that a silver four-door Nissan sedan pulled up to her on Colman Street and the driver, a Hispanic male, possibly in his 20s, with tribal tattoos on his right arm and close-cut dark brown hair, asked where she was going. The student told police that the "vehicle followed her for a bit" while the man allegedly asked her how old she was and told her she was beautiful before driving off.

On Friday, about 7 a.m., another juvenile female student said a possibly Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s, with short hair or possibly bald and with a long brown goatee, pulled up in a silver four-door sedan as she walked on Blackhall Street. The student told police the man rolled down his windows and kept saying "Hey" to her, as well as, "Sweetie, how are you?" The student kept walking onto Williams Street and the vehicle started to follow her until stopping abruptly and driving back down Blackhall Street, she told police.

The New London Police Department is working with New London Public Schools officials to actively address student safety concerns. Officers are proactively patrolling school areas during the mornings and dismissals.

Police encourage anyone with knowledge of the incidents to contact them at (860) 447-5269, ext. 0, or submit anonymous information via the New London Tips 411 system by texting NLPDTip plus the information to TIP411 (847411).
