State police arrest man involved in deadly hit-and-run

North Stonington — A Massachusetts man was charged Thursday with evading responsibility after police said he was driving a vehicle that struck and killed a 25-year-old woman on Route 2 in North Stonington last year and fled the scene.

Matthew T. Spirito, 32, of Northborough, Mass., was charged with evading responsibility, misconduct with a motor vehicle and failure to drive in the proper lane.

State police had obtained a warrant for the arrest of Spirito, who turned himself in Thursday. He was held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Thursday in New London Superior Court.

State police said Spirito hit a pedestrian with his car on Oct. 9, 2018 nearby 164 Norwich Westerly Road (Route 2) in North Stonington, killing Krystal Riske, 25, of Pawcatuck.

According to Day reports of the incident, Riske was flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital after she was hit by a dark, possibly gray, mid-size SUV traveling west on Route 2 near Route 184 on the evening of Oct. 9.

Riske had been walking on the right shoulder of Route 2. She died of her injuries early the next day, state police had said.
