Man faces home invasion charge in alleged attack on New London girlfriend

New London — A 41-year-old Middletown man faces multiple felony criminal charges after police said he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and held her down on her bed, angry about her texting other men.

Police said the suspect, Jimmy Stevenson, broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home on Boulevard Court by pulling an air conditioner out of one of the windows in the home. The alleged victim said she awoke to find Stevenson on top of her, holding one hand over her mouth and using his other arm to restrain her neck and chest.

The victim told police he yelled at her for texting other men, smashed her phone and punched a hole in the wall.

Responding to a 911 call, police arrived at the home at about 2 a.m. to find Stevenson outside with the victim and a witness. Stevenson told police he was there to “work things out with his girlfriend.”

The victim, who police said had a swollen lip, said they broke up more than a month earlier.

Stevenson is charged with home invasion, second-degree strangulation, third-degree assault, violation of a protective order, second-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and sixth-degree larceny.

Police said there was an existing protective order at the time of the alleged crime. The order was in place on Feb. 27, the day Stevenson was arrested on the charge of second-degree harassment. The case was also related to the victim.

During his booking, police said they found Stevenson in possession of the victim’s Apple Watch and the victim’s sister’s checkbook.

A New London Superior Court judge on Tuesday ordered Stevenson held on $150,000 under a medical watch. He is due back in court on Nov. 12.
