Licitra charged with violation of probation in Saint Bernard embezzlement case

A 54-year-old man who was convicted in 2008 of embezzling more than $841,000 from Saint Bernard School has been charged with violating the terms of his probation.

Salvatore Licitra, 55, of Pulaski, N.Y., appeared Tuesday in New London Superior Court. He is free on a $25,000 bond, but prosecutor Stephen M. Carney has filed a motion to increase the bond amount that will be heard at Licitra's next court appearance on Dec. 9.

Licitra has a criminal history dating back to the 1980s, and Superior Court Judge Susan B. Handy remarked at his sentencing in New London Superior Court that he had been a thief his entire life.

While working at the Catholic high school in Uncasville, he diverted checks into a "Sunshine Camp" account that he had opened in 2002 at the Bank of America without the knowledge of his superiors. Handy sentenced him to seven years in prison, followed by five years of probation, and ordered him to repay the school.

He was released from prison in October 2014 and allowed to transfer his probation to the state of New York while still sending monthly restitution payments to the state of Connecticut.

His latest alleged offenses, according to an arrest warrant affidavit written by Adult Probation Officer Samantha Turley, include stealing a vacuum cleaner from a Kohl's department store in New York in March 2016 and receiving credit for a comforter he had not purchased. He pleaded guilty to second-degree falsifying business records and was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge.

According to the affidavit, Licitra has only paid $2,000 toward his restitution, and had not made a payment since April 2016. The probation office had required him to make payments of $200 a month.
