'Suicide by cop' incident at Norwich hotel resolved peacefully, police say

Norwich — An incident in which a person was threatening “suicide by cop” at a hotel here was resolved peacefully early Saturday morning, city police say.

Officers were called to the Holiday Inn off of Route 82 about 3:30 a.m. for a subject in a room threatening suicide by police. Guests on the floors above and below were evacuated from the hotel, police said in a morning news release, though it was not clear how many people were affected.

Officers were able to establish communication with the subject, who surrendered without incident at 5:51 a.m., police said in the release. A firearm was recovered in the room and the person was transported for an emergency psychological evaluation.

City police thanked state police for assistance with service throughout the city during the incident, as well as hotel staff and patrons for their cooperation.

Hotel staff declined to comment and directed inquiries to the hotel's corporate office, which did not respond to a message Saturday afternoon.

No further information was immediately available.
