Old Saybrook — Four structures, including two that were destroyed, caught fire Friday amid high winds in the Chalker Beach section of town.

The blaze on Beach Road West began about 3:30 p.m., Old Saybrook fire Chief Joe Johnson said Friday evening. The home at 29 Beach Road West became fully engulfed in flames, which were spread to homes on either side of that structure by high winds off of Long Island Sound, the Old Saybrook Fire Department said in a news release later Friday. The home at 27 Beach Road West also became heavily involved in flames, according to the release.

Police reported that a single person was home at 29 Beach Road West when the fire began but was able to escape unharmed with pets. No injuries were reported, the release said.

The fire boat Gordon B. Smith responded to the scene in rough seas, the release said, pumping water directly from the Sound onto the fire. Several other fire departments provided assistance, including Essex, Old Lyme, Clinton’s Rapid Intervention Team and Westbrook. Old Saybrook Ambulance and Middlesex Health Paramedic also responded. Units from Deep River, Flanders, Niantic, Killingworth, Madison and Haddam stepped in to cover emergencies elsewhere in Old Saybrook during the fire.

Due to the efforts of the responding firefighters, the homes on either size of the first two were damaged but not destroyed, the release said.

The Old Saybrook Fire Marshal’s Office and police will investigate the blaze, which was in the same area where two separate, three-home fires occurred years ago, the fire department said Friday evening on its Facebook page. Posts included videos of structures engulfed in flames.
