Driver goes off the road, into trees in Groton

Groton — An accident on Interstate 95 south shut down the Exit 88 off-ramp for about a half-hour Wednesday afternoon, state police say.

The one-vehicle accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. The driver was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after being extricated from the vehicle with minor injuries, according to State Police Troop E dispatch. They did not identify the driver.

The vehicle took out exit ramp signs and damaged about 100 feet of wire rope on the side of the road, state police said. Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Capt. Michael Lowell said it looked like the driver lost control and went off the road. The vehicle ended up breaking through or going over the guard rail and into the forest off the ramp, coming to a stop against a tree halfway down the embankment.

State police said authorities received multiple reports of erratic driving regarding the vehicle before the accident.

In addition to state police and Poquonnock Bridge firefighters, Old Mystic Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance and L+M paramedics responded to the scene.
