East Lyme — A tractor-trailer driver fled the scene of a crash after merging into another vehicle and causing a seven-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Interstate 95 south, police said.

At 5:58 a.m., the tractor-trailer was traveling in the right lane of I-95 south near Exit 72 when it merged into another vehicle that was traveling in the left lane, according to Connecticut State Police at Troop E in Montville. The tractor-trailer then fled the scene, police said.

After the first vehicle was hit, it was stuck in the left lane. The crash caused another tractor-trailer and multiple vehicles to collide with one another, police said.

It was unclear if anyone was injured in the crash, which caused significant delays during the Thursday morning commute.

Troopers responded to the scene and were looking for the driver of the initial tractor-trailer. Anyone with information was asked to contact Trooper Brian Lovell of Troop E at (860) 848-6500.
