    UPDATED: Car crash knocks out power to 1,400 customers in Norwich

    Norwich —  A car struck a pole on Newton Street early Sunday morning, causing "significant injuries" to the 41-year-old man who was driving and knocking out power to about 1,400 customers. 

    The power was restored by 1 p.m. Sunday. 

    The driver was taken to William W. Backus Hospital for injuries, according to a Norwich Fire Department press release. City public utilities spokesperson Chris Riley said Sunday afternoon that employees had worked through the night to replace the pole and wires that were knocked down in front of 42 Newton St.

    The fire department said the car then traveled onto the front lawn of 24 Newton St. before finally coming to a stop. The driver extricated themself from the vehicle, according to the battalion chief's office. The name of the driver was not available.

    Norwich police are investigating the accident.
