UPDATED: Five people rescued from sinking boat off Fishers Island

5 people rescued from sinking boat off Fishers Island

Five people were rescued from a sinking boat in the Long Island Sound off of Fishers Island Sunday night, according to Coast Guard officials. No injuries were reported, officials said.

The group was rescued about 9 p.m. as their small, white boat sank near Race Point, officials said.

They were saved by a rescue boat launched by the Cape Henlopen ferry, officials said.

New London Mayor Michael Passero said the ferry, captained by Mike Ward, saw the boat flashing to them in distress and sent out a rescue boat.

The rescue boat, operated by Gerald Flanders, luckily made it over to the boat in time, Passero said.

A spokesperson for the Cross Sound Ferry did not respond to requests for comment.
