Stonington police charge Uncasville man in connection with two robberies

Stonington -- Police have charged an Uncasville man with robbing a credit union and a convenience store here last month.

Jeffrey J. Mumford, 37, of 986 Norwich New London Turnpike, Apt. 5, was charged with first degree robbery with a firearm, second-degree robbery, fourth-degree larceny and sixth-degree larceny. According to state Department of Correction records, he is being held at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center on a $460,150 bond on these and charges in another case involving violation of a protective order.

Police say that on Sept. 9, Mumford robbed the Charter Oak Federal Credit Union on Liberty Street in Pawcatuck and on Sept. 7 he robbed the Mystic Mobil on Route 27. In both cases, police say they established probable cause for his arrest and applied for a warrant.

In the credit union case, police say a man entered the building just before 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, implied he had a weapon and fled with an undisclosed amount of money

According to the state judicial date base, Mumford has six other pending cases in Superior Court and has a dozen convictions over the past 11 years.
