    Man charged with stealing from Niantic Motel

    East Lyme — A Niantic man has been charged with stealing railings, vent covers, cables and materials from the Niantic Motel, East Lyme police said Thursday in an incident report.

    Frank Debartolo, 57, of 237 W. Main St., Apt. 329, was charged with six counts of second-degree criminal trespass, four counts of third-degree burglary and six counts of sixth-degree larceny.

    Police said they had been investigating the theft of copper pipes and metal from the motel, which is closed and being renovated, for two months. Police identified Debartolo as a suspect and said he admitted to stealing from the motel from Aug. 3 to Sept. 3.

    Debartolo said of the six times he went to the property, he went inside the motel four times without permission and stole brass, aluminum, copper and steel, police said. Police submitted an arrest warrant application for Debartolo and served the warrant on Thursday.

    Police said Debartolo was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 18.
