Vehicle rolls over, catches fire in Ledyard

Ledyard — A Jeep Cherokee rolled over and caught fire, closing roads here Tuesday afternoon.

Ledyard police said they received a call reporting the vehicle traveling erratically about 1:18 p.m. The vehicle reportedly went off the road, struck a rock and utility pole and rolled over, town police Chief John Rich said in a news release Tuesday evening.

The vehicle came to rest on the roadway on Route 214 (Iron Street) near Winfield Way, he said. It blocked traffic in both directions and caught fire.

Rich said police Sgt. Tom Olsen was driving around looking for the vehicle, came upon the crash and was able to cut away the airbag to help the driver out of the vehicle. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Hakeem Quasin Dannett of New London, was taken to Backus Hospital with minor injuries, Rich said.

Roads were closed between Albatross Drive and Shewville Road until 2:21 p.m. Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire companies responded to the fire, Rich said, as well as the town fire marshal and American Ambulance. Workers from the Public Works Department also responded to the scene with a bucket loader to remove the rock from the road, he said.

“The crash is under investigation and enforcement action is pending,” Rich said.
