Norwich police investigating scammer impersonating officer

Norwich — The Norwich Police Department is investigating a series of phone calls in which a scammer is impersonating police Lt. John Perry.

The scammer, posing as Perry, is leaving voicemails asking recipients to return his call. When they do, callers hear an outgoing voicemail message delivered by a man with a Southern accent that says, "You have reached the confidential voicemail of Lieutenant John Perry of the Norwich Police Department. If you need immediate attention please call 911. If not please leave a message,” according to a news release sent out by Perry.

The calls were being received from the phone number (860) 650-4200, which was shut off while police were investigating, Perry said.

Perry, in a statement released Friday, asked members of the public not to give any personal information or payments to anyone who calls claiming to be a police officer.

Anyone who receives a similar call or voicemail is asked to contact the Norwich Police Department at (860) 886-5561.
