Kitchen fire damages four apartments in New London

New London — Four apartments in a downtown New London building were damaged after a fire broke out in a kitchen Monday night.

Firefighters responded to a fire alarm at the Mohican Apartments, 281 State St., about 8:05 p.m. They were met in the lobby by a tenant, who told them there was a fire in their apartment on the eighth floor, according to the fire department.

The building's sprinkler system had extinguished a fire on the stove by the time firefighters arrived at the apartment. The unit sustained smoke and water damage, fire officials said.

Three other apartments, one on the eighth floor and two on the seventh floor, also sustained water damage.

Only one person was displaced from their home, fire officials said.
