East Lyme — A Niantic man was critically injured in a Monday night scooter crash on East Pattagansett Road near Union Cemetery.

Town police Chief Mike Finkelstein on Wednesday said Gaudencio Chapuli Amastal, 39, remains in critical condition.

The department in a Tuesday news release said officers responded to a 911 call about the crash to find the man unconscious on East Pattagansett Road near Union Cemetery. Gaudencio was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital.

Police said the initial investigation and witness statements indicated the man was traveling south on East Pattagansett Road near Union Cemetery when the Vespa scooter left the road, causing him to strike his head on the ground.

The accident remains under investigation by the East Lyme Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Brianna Forbes at (860) 739-5900.
