    Groton man killed in early morning crash in Ledyard

    Ledyard — Police say 49-year-old Groton man died early Thursday in a head-on car crash with another vehicle on Route 117.

    According to a news release, town police and fire departments were called at 2:22 a.m. to a two-car crash in front of house number 1817. The damage to both vehicles was extensive.

    Robert Golden II of 177 Briar Hill Road, Groton, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said it appears he was driving south on Route 117 in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra.

    Jeremy Gavitt, 32, of 22 Brandywine Drive, Westerly, was driving the other vehicle, a 2016 GMC Envoy. He was taken from the scene by ambulance, and police did not provide an update on his condition. American Ambulance and the state Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene.

    The Regional Accident Investigation Unit, comprising Ledyard, Groton Town and Stonington police, conducted the initial investigation at the scene. The ongoing investigation is being led by Ledyard's Accident Investigation Unit.
