Taftville building fire displaces families, sends resident to hospital

Norwich — Four families were displaced and an elderly resident was transported to the hospital after an building fire Saturday night at 150 Norwich Ave. in Taftville.

At 10:37 p.m., Norwich Fire Battalion Chief Scott Merchant said four fire companies — Taftville, Occum, Yantic and Norwich — were dispatched to a fire in the mixed-use building, which has commercial use on the lower level and apartments on the upper levels.

Merchant said he did not know why the elderly resident was transported to the hospital.

Chief Timothy Jencks of the Taftville Volunteer Fire Company was in command at the time of the fire and could not be reached for comment Sunday.

A spokesperson from the American Red Cross said Sunday the organization is assisting five adults and their four families after the fire.

"Those affected will connect with Red Cross caseworkers in coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan," read the press release.

Merchant said the building was saved and most of the damage was in the interior bathrooms. He said the fire started in the basement at the rear end of the building and extended upwards towards the apartments.

"The fire was extinguished quickly," Merchant said. "It was a quick knockdown, but it took extensive overhaul searching for the hidden fire."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
