Groton — A male was taken to the hospital early Sunday with a non life-threatening gunshot wound, after being shot in a Bridge Street parking lot, according to City police.

Police said they were called early Sunday morning to the area of 171 Bridge St. for a report of a gunshot victim and determined that the person was shot and that all other people had left before police arrived, according to a news release.

The victim, who was not identified by police, was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back of his body and had surgery. He is expected to recover, police said.

"This appears to be an isolated incident in our community but the investigation is continuing," police said. "We extend our thanks to the Town Police and the Connecticut State Police who provided assistance."
