State police arrest wrong-way driver in Old Saybrook

Old Saybrook -- State police said they arrested a Hartford man who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 Sunday afternoon and was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Cesar Ignacio Leon, 25, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, illegal entry/exit of a highway, driving without a license and first-degree reckless endangerment.

According to state police at Troop F in Westbrook, they received multiple calls around 12:30 p.m. Sunday of a red Chevrolet sports utility vehicle driving erratically on Interstate 95 north in the area of exit 57. The callers said the driver was operating in the median and nearly struck the center concrete barrier several times.

At 12:50 p.m., troopers said they received more than six additional reports of the car driving southbound in the northbound lanes in the area of Exit 66. Troopers located the car at the northbound exit ramp, where they said Leon was outside the car urinating near a guardrail.

He failed a series of field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest, state police said. He was held in lieu of $25,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Middlesex Superior Court.
