North Stonington gas station closed following fire

North Stonington — A fire Wednesday left a gas station with “substantial damage” that prompted it to close, according to the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company.

Several fire departments responded to the Chucky’s gas station at 1 Mystic Road near Route 2 about 11:43 a.m. for a fire that started in the building’s office, the fire department said.

Flames extended throughout the building, causing substantial damage to the structure, the fire department said. The building was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Several departments responded to the scene to help put out the fire, including firefighters and first responders from Mashantucket; Mystic; Old Mystic; Wequetequock; Ashaway, R.I.; Preston; Voluntown and Pawcatuck departments. Providence Canteen also responded.

The cause of the fire still was under investigation, fire officials said Wednesday evening.
