Norwich fire leaves 7 displaced
Norwich — A fire has left seven people displaced from a two-family home at 78 Prospect St., according to the city fire department.
One of the residents had to be treated for smoke inhalation, Battalion Chief Marc Benjamin said in a news release late Wednesday.
Firefighters responded to the residence for a kitchen fire reported about 8:16 p.m., Benjamin said. They found heavy flames from windows at the back and side of the home, extending up to the second floor and roof.
Firefighters had to tackle the fire from the interior and the exterior, knocking down the flames in about 25 minutes, Benjamin said. It took them just over an hour to get the scene totally under control.
"The fire was contained to the first floor but there was extensive smoke damage throughout," he said. Fire damage was visible around two windows at the back of the home.
People were in the house at the time of the fire, city police had said earlier in the evening.
The Norwich Fire Department, all of the city's volunteer departments and a Mohegan Tribal FAST Team responded, as well as city police and American Ambulance. The Red Cross also responded and is assisting the residents.
The city building and utilities officials also were on scene, Benjamin said, and the city fire marshal's office is investigating.
