Crews repair leaking gas line on Norwich street

Norwich — Firefighters responded Saturday to a natural gas leak on Asylum Street.

Norwich Fire Department crews were dispatched at 12:32 p.m. Saturday after a natural gas odor was reported outside on Asylum Street between Newton Street and Grant Court, according to a news release. Norwich Public Utilities spokesman Chris Riley said NPU and fire crews were on site by 12:40 p.m.

“Crews metered the area and found high readings at the storm drain in front of 133 Asylum Street,” the release stated, and the road was closed in the area with the help of Norwich Police Department. Crews went inside the homes on either side of the street and found no abnormal readings. The NPU on-call technician confirmed the levels in the street and called for additional crews.

A crack in the natural gas line was located, Riley said Saturday evening.

The scene was turned over to arriving NPU road crews, which continued metering the houses and making repairs in the street, according to the release. NPU was instructed to call dispatch if the fire department was needed again.

After backfilling of the trench, NPU completed repairs by 7 p.m., Riley said, and city police said the street reopened shortly afterward.
