Stonington police investigate attempted home invasion with shots fired

Stonington — Police said they made one arrest and are continuing to investigate an attempted home invasion in Pawcatuck on Tuesday night in which shots were fired at a house.

At 9:46 p.m. police said they received a 911 call from residents of a single-family house at 120 Liberty St. reporting that several armed individuals came to their back door and attempted to enter. Police said when the residents confronted the armed individuals, they ran off and fired their handgun at the house as they left the property. No one was injured by the gunshots.

Capt. Todd Olson said Wednesday that it does not appear that the suspects randomly chose the home.

When they arrived, police said they located a suspicious van, later discovered to be stolen out of New York, on Liberty Street. When police approached the van, they said one person ran off while officers detained a second individual.

Carl Jefferson, 52, of Uniondale, N.Y., was charged with home invasion, third-degree larceny, simple trespass and conspiracy.

Stonington officers, along with those from Westerly Police Department and state police troopers, closed a short section of Liberty Street while searching for the other suspects. Police dogs attempted to track the suspects and the Pawcatuck Fire Department utilized its drone with infrared imaging to check the area, as well.

Police sent an emergency notification out to residents of the neighborhood explaining what was happening and requested they report any suspicious activity to police. Police sent out another notification after the area had been searched and requested that residents call if they see or hear anything suspicious.

Police said they are continuing to search for the other suspects.
