Groton pickup truck crash remains under investigation

Groton — Town police said the driver of the pickup truck that drove into Northern Lights Smoke Shop on Long Hill Road on Saturday afternoon has been treated and released from the hospital.

Police said in a news release Monday that they are continuing to investigate the crash, including whether the incident and the driver's subsequent behavior was due to a medical issue.

First responders observed that a 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup "had driven through the front entrance almost entirely to the rear of the store," according to a news release Saturday from police. The incident happened around 12:20 p.m.

Police detailed in the Monday release that the driver, Jeremy Coher, 45, of 360 Thames St., No. 21, Groton, "had to be physically restrained in order to extract him from the vehicle and the building" and since Coher resisted, it took a long time for first responders to remove him from the building. Police said "this delay resulted in prolonged exposure to responding personnel."

The two officers treated for smoke inhalation at Pequot Health Center have been released, police said.

Police said Coher continued to struggle with first responders while they prepared him to be transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for treatment of his lacerations.

Police said he was not placed under arrest at the time. Police said the "department will consult with the State's Attorney's office to determine what, if any, charges are applicable in this case."
