Connecticut State Police patrol train stations after subway shooting

Connecticut State Police said Tuesday they were patrolling train stations in Connecticut as a precaution following a subway shooting in New York City, but there is no threat identified in Connecticut.

Amtrak said it was increasing police presence on its trains and stations, including New York Penn Station, while New London police also said they were taking proactive steps.

The Associated Press reported that "at least 10 people" were shot Tuesday in the Brooklyn, N.Y. shooting. "At least 29 in all were treated at hospitals for gunshot wounds, smoke inhalation and other conditions, according to hospitals," the AP article stated.

Connecticut State Police said in a statement Tuesday that they were monitoring the situation in Brooklyn, N.Y. and working with state, local and federal authorities. Connecticut troopers are assigned to federal task forces, including for New York City, they said.

They said no threat has been identified in Connecticut and that state police resources "have been dispatched to patrol several locations, including train stations in the state to ensure safety for all passengers."

"CT State Police will continue to follow the incident and be proactive in protecting our citizens," police said.

State Police added that they are continuing to monitor for any credible threats in Connecticut.

New London Police Capt. Matthew Galante said in a statement that: "In light of the hostile situation, which occurred in New York today on the subway line, we as an agency initiated proactive measures to ensure our preparedness."

"We have been and will continue to be in contact with our regional and community partners," he added. "Currently, there are no direct threats to our region or any location/venue within the City of New London. We will continue to monitor the situation, collaborate with our partners and adapt as necessary."

Amtrak spokeswoman Beth Toll said in a statement that Amtrak "has increased its police presence on our trains and stations, including New York Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall (opposite Penn Station), and the Amtrak Police Department will continue to work with our law enforcement and emergency management partners at local, state, federal and private sector level to help in their investigations."

Toll also said Amtrak "uses enhanced security measures to make it harder for those who seek to do harm to our passengers, employees, equipment and facilities and ensure an efficient response to potential threats."

"This multi-layered approach includes deployment of Amtrak Police Department officers and intelligence gathering activities; protection of critical rail assets through targeted access control and infrastructure protection measures; security awareness, training and exercises; consistent engagement with first responders and transit partners; and security program planning rooted in risk management principles to ensure effective implementation of mitigation strategies," she said.
