UPDATED: Man killed, child seriously injured in North Stonington crash

North Stonington — A 36-year-old Norwich man died in a single-car accident on Route 2 on Thursday morning and an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured, according to Connecticut State Police.

Josue Fragoza of 17 Howard St. was pronounced dead on scene by EMS, the accident report said. The 11-year-old passenger was taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich with serious injuries and then airlifted to Hartford Hospital.

The relationship between Fragoza and the child was not immediately clear; both live at the 17 Howard St. address, according to the report, which also said next of kin was notified. State police said early Thursday evening they recently checked on the girl's condition and had no update, and she remains hospitalized.

According to the accident report, Fragoza was driving a red 2008 Ford Fusion east on Route 2 and approaching Cossaduck Hill Road, or Route 201, just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway, police said.

The report said when the car reentered the roadway, it entered into a yaw — or a fishtail, with the back tires skidding to the side of the vehicle — and crossed both lanes of traffic. The car rolled over into the westbound lanes and came to a stop on its side, against a stone wall. The report said both occupants were wearing their seat belts and both airbags deployed.

Route 2 was closed from Swantown Hill Road to Route 201 but has since been reopened.

    Police are investigating the accident.
