    Major League Baseball notebook

    Yankees 11, Orioles 7

New York launched four homers Monday night, and manager Joe Girardi wanted to talk about another kind of hit: the one Mark Teixeira's right elbow took from a pitch from Jeremy Guthrie.

Teixeira left in the second inning, and the Yankees went on to victory.

Girardi received a scare when Teixeira winced with pain after being struck by a fastball. The injury was determined to be a bruise.

"I was kind of like, 'Oh no!' when he got hit," Girardi said. "He won't play (Tuesday) and probably won't play Wednesday. We'll shoot for Thursday."

Girardi was glad the injury wasn't serious, but he was irked about the timing of it.

"The guys want to play now. They want to get ready," he said. "(Guthrie) was struggling with his command today, and I didn't want to see any of our guys get hurt."

Teixeira said: "I should be fine. Hopefully (the swelling) doesn't get too bad tonight. Tomorrow should be a nice long treatment day."

Guthrie allowed three hits, walked four, hit two batters and struck out seven. He called the pitch to Teixeira "a two-seamer that didn't cut" but added: "These guys are aggressive and go out there and attack, that makes it more difficult to get out of the way."

David Winfree replaced Teixeira and hit a three-run homer off Mark Hendrickson in the sixth, one of six homers on a night when a 24 mph wind was blowing toward center field.

Robinson Cano hit a three-run drive off Guthrie in the first inning, Marcus Thames hit a solo shot off Matt Albers in the seventh and P.J. Pilittere added a solo drive against Patrick Egan.

Javier Vasquez allowed four runs in 5 1-3 innings for New York.

    Rays 9, Red Sox 3

Evan Longoria homered, Jeff Niemann threw six scoreless innings and Tampa Bay beat Boston.

Nevin Ashley went 3 for 3 with a solo homer for Tampa Bay. Niemann allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out six.

Josh Beckett pitched six innings for Boston in his last spring outing before facing the New York Yankees on Sunday night in the major league opener. He allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Mike Lowell went 2 for 3 for Boston.

    Mets 7, Marlins 6

Pitcher Jonathon Niese hit a two-run double and New York tagged Anibal Sanchez.

Sanchez gave up seven runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings.

The Mets scored five times in the second inning on RBI singles by Gary Matthews Jr. and Henry Blanco, Niese's double and a grounder by Angel Pagan.

Niese, who's been competing for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation, struggled in the third when he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks.

    NOTES

    Reyes takes batting practice

Jose Reyes is a step closer to appearing in a game for the first time this spring.

The Mets' shortstop took batting practice against minor-league pitchers Monday morning and said the session went better than expected.

Reyes has participated in six workouts since returning to camp Wednesday, following a three-week absence with a hyperactive thyroid that prevented him from doing any physical activity.

Reyes said he feels very good.

"I put the ball in play," he said. "That's what I want, and I saw a lot of good pitches, so it was good."

    Dice-K pitches simulated game

Red Sox pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka, whose spring training has been delayed by back and neck problems, threw 62 pitches in a simulated game.

The right-hander is slated to pitch next in an exhibition game Saturday against the Nationals in Washington. He threw 41 pitches for strikes over three innings Monday.
