Orioles name Showalter as their manager

Baltimore - Buck Showalter was hired to manage the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, his latest rebuilding project in a major league career full of them.

Showalter's first game will be Tuesday night at Camden Yards against the Los Angeles Angels.

Baltimore had the worst record in the majors at 31-70 going into Thursday night against Kansas City and is headed toward its 13th straight losing season. The Orioles fired manager Dave Trembley on June 4 and replaced him on an interim basis with Juan Samuel.

"Buck Showalter's proven track record makes him the right choice for manager of the Orioles," president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said in a statement. "We believe Buck's extensive experience and expertise will be a major benefit to us as we look towards a more successful future."

Samuel will return to his job as the team's third-base coach. Baltimore went 16-31 with him in charge.

Showalter's move was first reported by ESPN, where he worked as an analyst. His last television appearance was on Monday.

Showalter is a two-time AL Manager of the Year, winning the award in 1994 with the New York Yankees and 2004 with Texas. Both times, he had taken over teams and guided their turnarounds.

Twins acquire closer Capps from Nationals

The Minnesota Twins have acquired All-Star closer Matt Capps from the Washington Nationals for minor leaguers Wilson Ramos and Joe Testa.

The Twins say they will also receive cash from the Nationals.

Capps got his 26th save in 30 opportunities earlier Thursday in the Nationals' win over the Atlanta Braves. He will help bolster a bullpen that was missing its closer, Joe Nathan, since the beginning of the season.

    Padres get Tejada from Orioles

The NL West-leading San Diego Padres obtained infielder Miguel Tejada and just more than $1 million from the Baltimore Orioles, convinced that the 36-year-old can help them in the infield and at the plate.

"It's a good chance at being in the playoffs and that's always good," Tejada said in Kansas City, where he was scratched from the Orioles lineup before Thursday night's game against the Royals. "I think we can have a chance to win."

Tejada, the 2002 AL MVP, hasn't been to the playoffs since the Oakland A's made four straight appearances from 2000-03, losing in the divisional round each year.

Tejada is hitting .269 with seven homers and 39 RBIs, down from the .313 he hit with Houston last year.

Marlins trade 3B Cantu to Texas

Jorge Cantu saw the light blinking on his cell phone when he got to his locker and knew it might finally be time. Then, he read the text message from his agent: He was headed for Texas.

The AL West-leading Rangers added another bat for the playoff push, acquiring Cantu from the Florida Marlins on for two minor league pitchers.

For Cantu, this ends more than a week of wondering whether he would be staying or leaving at the trade deadline. Still, shaking hands and saying goodbye to the teammates he's grown to love during three seasons in South Florida was bittersweet.

Cantu hit .262 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs for Florida. The Rangers already have All-Star Michael Young at third base - Cantu said in recent days he was prepared to switch back to his former spot at first base, a position of need for the Rangers.

Cantu's arrival will help a club that just placed All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler on the disabled list with a strained groin.
