    NHL Roundup

    Islanders 4, Rangers 2

John Tavares had three goals, including the tiebreaking tally in the third period, and added an assist for the New York Islanders, who beat the New York Rangers and gave goalie Evgeni Nabokov a win in his return to the NHL on Saturday night.

The Islanders have won three straight following an opening-night loss and they have Tavares to thank for the past two.

After the young forward had two goals and two assists in the first period of New York's 5-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Thursday, Tavares roared back with a pair of go-ahead, power-play goals and his second straight four-point game in front of a sellout crowd that traded cheers for both teams.

The second goal was a precision tip-in of captain Mark Streit's shot from the blue line 3:30 into the third, completing a play that started when he won a faceoff.

    Devils 3, Predators 2

Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise each scored in a shootout to lead New Jersey to a victory over Nashville.

Kovalchuk also scored a power-play goal and David Clarkson added a goal for New Jersey. It was the Devils' second straight shootout win.

The Predators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Wilson, skating in the middle of the slot, scored on a tip-in of a pass from Sergei Kostitsyn at 12:22.

    Kings 3, Flyers 2

Mike Richards had a triumphant return to Philadelphia, assisting on Jack Johnson's power-play goal at 1:39 of overtime to lift Los Angeles over the Flyers.

Richards returned to Philadelphia for the first time since his shocking trade in June. He was the Flyers' captain and led them to the Stanley Cup finals in 2010.

Richards heard mostly cheers during his pregame introduction and received a huge ovation when the Flyers thanked him on the big screen for his years of service. The goodwill ended soon after and he was booed each time he touched the puck.

Justin Williams scored twice for the Kings and Jonathan Quick made 32 saves to spoil Philadelphia's perfect start.

    Sabres 3, Penguins 2

Nathan Gerbe and Luke Adam each had a goal and an assist as Buffalo beat Pittsburgh for the first time in almost two years.

Drew Stafford also scored for the Sabres, who had won in regulation only once in their past 10 trips to Pittsburgh. The Penguins lost in regulation for the first time in six games this season.

James Neal scored for the third consecutive game, extending his NHL-leading goal total to five for Pittsburgh. Jordan Staal added a third-period goal for the Penguins, whose streak of earning at least a point in five straight games to open the season was their best in 17 years.

    Capitals 2, Senators 1

Marcus Johansson and Nicklas Backstrom scored to lead Washington past Ottawa.

Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun had 33 saves in his third straight start.

Mike Knuble assisted on both goals for Washington, which has won its first four games of the season. This was the Capitals' first win in regulation.

Peter Regin scored his first goal of the season for Ottawa, which has lost all three of its road games to open the season and four of five overall.

    Coyotes 4, Jets 1

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored twice and Phoenix won its home opener against winless Winnipeg.

The 20-year-old Swedish defenseman, Phoenix's top draft pick and the sixth selection overall in 2009, has three goals in the team's first four games.

Daymond Langkow got his first goal of the season 34 seconds in. Ray Whitney had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes. Mike Smith made 18 saves and stopped Nik Antropov's penalty shot.

    Maple Leafs 3, Flames 2

Phil Kessel had two goals and an assist as Toronto overcame an early two-goal deficit, beating Calgary to extend its season-opening winning streak to three games.

Kessel set up Joffrey Lupul's goal at 1:15 of the second, then tied it at 2 with 3:22 left in the period. He added his fifth goal of the season at 41 seconds of the third.

    Avalanche 6, Canadiens 5

Milan Hejduk and Matt Duchene scored on Colorado's first two shootout attempts and the Avalanche extended their winning streak to four by beating Montreal.

David Jones had two goals and an assist and Semyon Varlamov made 38 saves for Colorado, which blew three one-goal leads before Kyle Quincey scored with 4:03 left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

    Panthers 3, Lightning 2

Marcel Goc scored the lone goal in a shootout and Jose Theodore stopped all three shots he faced during the tiebreaker to lift Florida over Tampa Bay.

Theodore denied Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier to seal a home-opening win for the Panthers. Theodore stopped 28 shots in regulation and overtime.

    Red Wings 3, Wild 2

Johan Franzen scored a power-play goal with 48.5 seconds left in overtime, rallying Detroit to a victory over the Minnesota.

    Stars 4, Blue Jackets 2

Sheldon Souray and Michael Ryder scored third-period goals to help Dallas defeat Columbus.

Mike Ribeiro added three assists for the Stars, who improved to 4-0 at home. Brenden Morrow and Loui Eriksson also had goals for Dallas.
