    Major League Baseball roundup

Chris Iannetta flung the bat aside as if he got all of the pitch.

In a way, he did — a walk's just as good as a hit, especially with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Iannetta brought in the winning run by drawing a five-pitch walk, and Colorado beat Los Angeles after squandering a late lead Sunday.

"I like my chances against a guy in that situation — someone with their back against the wall and has to make pitches over the plate," the Rockies catcher said.

It was the second walk-off win in as many days for Colorado. Ryan McMahon lined a three-run homer in the ninth on Saturday.

DJ LeMahieu led off the ninth with a single to right that Yasiel Puig misplayed, allowing LeMahieu to take second. After David Dahl was intentionally walked with one out, Ian Desmond grounded out. McMahon was also walked to load the bases.

Manager Bud Black thought about using pinch-hitter Carlos Gonzalez, but elected to stick with Iannetta, who drew the walk off Dylan Floro (4-3) when the right-hander's sinker missed low.

"I don't get the job done and we go to the next inning. It's not live or die," Iannetta said of the pressure situation. "If he doesn't get the job done, the game's over."

The Rockies took three of four for their first home series win against the Dodgers since April 7-9, 2017. The loss dropped the Dodgers out of a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.

It was the third straight game a Dodgers bullpen without Kenley Jansen — who's sidelined with an irregular heartbeat — was tagged with the loss.

"When you're putting guys in a tough spot in tight situations where every game is close, and you can't get any breathing room, it makes it tough on everyone," manager Dave Roberts said.

Wade Davis (2-6) pitched a shaky ninth in a tie game after Colorado failed to earlier protect a 3-0 lead.

Chad Bettis pitched efficiently into the seventh before turning it over to the struggling bullpen.

That's when the Dodgers went to work.

Brian Dozier delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh off Scott Oberg. In the eighth, Matt Kemp tied the game at 3 with a sacrifice fly against Adam Ottavino.

Davis got two quick outs in the ninth before walking Dozier, who stole second and then third when the shifted infield wasn't paying attention. Davis retired pinch-hitter Joc Pederson on a grounder to end the inning.

"They bended a little, didn't totally break," Rockies manager Bud Black said.

Bettis went 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and three singles. It was his second start since returning from the disabled list after a pesky blister on his right middle finger kept him out for a month.

Rich Hill threw six innings and allowed three runs, two earned, as he returned to the mound at Coors Field for the first time since April 23, 2008, when he was with the Chicago Cubs.

His biggest mistake was a two-seam fastball on a 3-2 count that Charlie Blackmon knocked into the left-field bleachers in the sixth. It was Blackmon's first homer since July 31.

It was a frustrating day for Los Angeles' Manny Machado, who went 0 for 4. He broke his bat over his leg after striking out in the seventh. He was lifted in a double-switch in the bottom of the inning.

    Cubs 4, Nationals 3

Pinch-hitter David Bote smashed a grand slam against Ryan Madson with two outs in the ninth inning to lift Chicago to a victory over Washington.

Bote's long drive to center field came after Washington's Max Scherzer and Chicago's Cole Hamels delivered simply dominant starts.

Madson (2-5) came in with a 3-0 lead to start the ninth and quickly ran into trouble. He gave up an infield single to Jason Heyward with one out and hit Albert Almora with a pitch. Madson then retired Kyle Schwarber on a foul pop before hitting Contreras to load the bases, but Bote drove a 2-2 pitch well beyond the center-field wall.

Bote's drive made a winner of Justin Wilson (4-3), who got the final two outs in the ninth.

    Mariners 4, Astros 3 (10)

Ryon Healy hit a tying homer with two out in the ninth inning, Mitch Haniger delivered an RBI double in the 10th and the Mariners swept a four-game series from the AL West-leading Astros.

It's the first time in franchise history that Seattle swept a four-game series from Houston. The third-place Mariners pulled within four games of the Astros.

Healy's solo drive off Hector Rondon made it 3-all. Pinch-hitter Dee Gordon singled against Roberto Osuna (1-1) with one out in the 10th, and the speedster easily scored on Haniger's double that skipped down the left field line.

Zach Duke (5-4) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win. Edwin Diaz got three outs for his 46th save.

    Cardinals 8, Royals 2

Yadier Molina hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the seventh inning, and St. Louis matched a season high with its fifth consecutive win.

The Cardinals moved eight games above .500, equaling their season high set on June 11, and improved to a National League-best 12-4 since July 27.

Molina's bases-loaded single scored Harrison Bader and Patrick Wisdom, who had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice in his major league debut.

Tyson Ross (7-9) pitched six solid innings in his St. Louis debut after he was claimed on waivers last week from San Diego. Ross stepped in for Luke Weaver, who was scratched after cutting his right index finger on the aluminum foil cover of his clubhouse meal on Saturday night.

The lowly Royals have dropped nine of 10. Jason Hammel (2-12) got the loss.

    Braves 8, Brewers 7

Ozzie Albies led off the seventh inning with a tiebreaking homer, one of three for Atlanta, and the Braves overcame 19 hits by Milwaukee.

Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dansby Swanson each hit a two-run homer for Atlanta, which took two of three in a matchup of playoff contenders. Jonny Venters (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and A.J. Minter worked the ninth for his 10th save.

Jesus Aguilar hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for Milwaukee. The Brewers left 13 runners on base.

Albies gave Atlanta the lead by lining his 21st homer over the left-field wall on a slider from Dan Jennings (4-4).

    Athletics 8, Angels 7

Jed Lowrie homered and moved over 1,000 hits for his career, and Oakland held on for its ninth win in 11 games.

The A's, who currently occupy the second AL wild-card spot, moved within 2 1/2 games of first-place Houston in the AL West.

Fernando Rodney (4-2) pitched a scoreless inning for his first victory with Oakland. Blake Treinen struck out the side in the ninth for his 30th save.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia went with a bullpen day. Taylor Cole (0-3), making his first career start, allowed three runs in 1 1/3 innings.

    Diamondbacks 9, Reds 2

Paul Goldschmidt hit two of Arizona's five homers, and the Diamondbacks avoided a sweep.

Daniel Descalso, Eduardo Escobar and David Peralta also connected for Arizona, and Zack Godley (13-6) pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. Goldschmidt finished with three hits and three RBIs.

Last-place Cincinnati had won three of four, including the first two games of the weekend series. Jose Peraza and Eugenio Suarez each had two hits, but Luis Castillo (6-10) was tagged for five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

    Padres 9, Phillies 3

Freddy Galvis hit a grand slam for San Diego, and Travis Jankowski stole four bases and scored three times.

Galvis connected against Jake Arrieta (9-7) in the third inning, hitting a two-out drive to center for his first career slam. It was his third homer in his last seven games and No. 8 on the season.

Last-place San Diego won for the fifth time in seven games, including two of three against NL East-leading Philadelphia. Joey Lucchesi (6-6) struck out six in six scoreless innings.

    Indians 9, White Sox 7

Carlos Carrasco struck out nine in seven innings, and the Indians held on for the win.

AL Central-leading Cleveland had a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, and almost blew it. Run-scoring singles by Tim Anderson and Kevan Smith trimmed the Indians' lead to 9-5 in the ninth before manager Terry Francona replaced Dan Otero with Cody Allen.

Adam Engel greeted the closer with a two-run triple before Allen struck out Nicky Delmonico and Yolmer Sanchez for his 23rd save in 26 chances.

Carrasco (14-6) allowed three hits. Melky Cabrera hit a three-run homer against one of his former teams, helping the Indians take two of three in the series.

Chicago's Dylan Covey (4-9) allowed six runs and seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

    Giants 4, Pirates 3

San Francisco's Dereck Rodriguez pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, continuing his sparkling rookie season.

Rodriguez (6-1) allowed one run, struck out four and walked one. Will Smith pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Nick Hundley and Joe Panik each drove in two runs for the Giants, and Gorkys Hernandez scored twice.

Starling Marte had a two-run double for the Pirates. Joe Musgrove (4-7) allowed three earned runs in six innings.

    Tigers 4, Twins 2

Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings and the Tigers beat the Twins on Jack Morris Day at Comerica Park.

The game started 20 minutes late because of the ceremony to retire Morris' No. 47 jersey. Morris and longtime teammate Alan Trammell were inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this month.

Boyd (7-10) won for the third time in four starts, giving up one run and two hits. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his 25th save.

Kohl Stewart (0-1) took the loss in his major league debut, allowing three runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

    Blue Jays 2, Rays 1

Kevin Pillar scored the tiebreaking run on an infield grounder in the sixth inning, helping the Blue Jays avoid a three-game series sweep.

Devon Travis had two hits and drove in a run as Toronto won for the second time in nine meetings with Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay's lone run came in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Willy Adames.

Jaime Garcia (3-6) worked one inning for the win. Ken Giles got three outs for his 13th save in 13 opportunities.

Tampa Bay's Jose Alvarado (1-5) got one out and was charged with a run and two hits.
