Renovated and Close to the Coast

Mere blocks from beaches, this four-bedroom colonial was renovated by the current owner
95 Glenwood Avenue in New London is listed for sale. The seller is asking $510,000 for the four-bedroom home.

    By Gretchen A. Peck

A paver-lined path leads to the sidelight-framed front door at 95 Glenwood Ave., New London—Welcome Home’s “House of the Week.” The 3,175-square-foot single-family home was built in 1925 and is part of a neighborhood setting in southern New London. The property is offered to the market for $510,000.

Melody Edelman, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker in East Lyme, is the seller’s agent.

“My client bought the home as a foreclosure in 1995. It was in really bad shape,” Edelman explained. “He has pretty much updated everything over the years: new kitchen, bathrooms and wood floors. A new roof was put on last year.”

Though the interiors have been transformed over time, some of the original mid-1920s elements remain.

Just inside the front door is a foyer with a grand central staircase leading to the bedrooms upstairs.

“The most spectacular detail is the staircase,” the listing agent noted. “It is the first thing you see when you come in the front door, and it is beautiful.”

The first floor comprises a spacious formal dining room, the kitchen, a butler’s pantry, half bath, a small den near the kitchen, a sunroom, and a large family room with a fireplace.

The first-floor layout has easy flow from one room to the next, including from the kitchen to the dining and family rooms.

“The kitchen is amazing, with custom granite, a six-burner gas cook’s stove, a large center island, double ovens and a bar area,” Edelman noted. “There is a butler’s pantry right off the kitchen—a great place for extra storage of pantry items, fine china, and other items. This really is a kitchen for someone who likes to cook and entertain.”

Edelman said the floor plan has effortless flow, from the kitchen to the dining room, through the family room’s French doors and out to the covered porch.

The kitchen at 95 Glenwood Avenue was renovated by the seller. It has a six-burner gas range, a large center island, double ovens and granite countertops.

“Upstairs is the master bedroom, with a walk-in closet and a full bath with a clawfoot tub,” Edelman mapped out the second floor. “There are three other bedrooms and another bath with a shower. There is a partially finished walk-up attic, mostly used for storage now, but it looks like it was lived in at one time.”

The 0.35-acre lot accommodates some outdoor living space, too. There’s a flagstone patio out back, with an outdoor kitchen and wood-burning fireplace.

“I know the owner loved to entertain,” Edelman attested. “The outdoor space was designed for having friends and family over for cookouts. Imagine coming home from the beach, which is within walking distance, and taking an outdoor shower and cooking up some good food on the outdoor barbeque—and then s’mores the outdoor fireplace!”

This home’s location puts the buyer within easy reach of the area’s largest employers, including General Dynamics/Electric Boat, Mitchell College and Connecticut College, and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, part of the Yale New Haven Health network.

The current owner built a beautiful backyard entertaining space, with a flagstone patio, outdoor kitchen and an outdoor wood-burning fireplace.

“Ocean Beach and several private beaches are close by. It’s a great place to walk,” Edelman said.

“It’s a lovely neighborhood, and the neighbors are so nice. Also, if you like the charm of antique homes, this area is for you! Lots of history here, and there are great restaurants close by: On the Waterfront, the Recovery Room, Tony D’s, Fred’s Shanty, and Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock to name a few. The Lighthouse Inn’s tavern just opened back up. The Garde Theater is popular, as well.”
