    Local roundup: Stuart, Cilley go low (5-under 66) in 96th Norwich Invite qualifying

    Norwich ― Eight golfers shot under par Friday during qualifying action in the 96th Norwich Invitational at Norwich Golf Course.

    Aidan Stuart of Madison Country Club earned medalist honors with a 5-under 66. Austin Cilley of Lake of Isles also had a 66.

    Aaron Vargas finished third at 3-under 68 and Jantzen Vargas had a 2-under 69.

    The top 16 golfers made the championship flight.

    Defending champion Dave Marshall of Woodstock also will play in Saturday’s round of 16 in match play.

    Tony Susi, Jason Longo, Mark Vassalotti, Nick Harrington, Chris DeLucia, Brett Shulick, Robert Tedoldi, Nick Hedden, Jonah Dupuis, Mark Prosnick and Donal Reilly also are in the championship flight.

    Quarterfinal action also will take place Saturday, with the survivors reaching the semifinals Sunday morning.

    The Norwich Invitational champion will be crowned Sunday afternoon.

    • Bryan Albee (Eastern Connecticut) pitched seven shutout innings during his first start of the summer and Montville’s Dougie DelaCruz (Mitchell) hit a solo home run as the Norwich Sea Unicorns defeated the Pittsfield Suns 3-1 at Dodd Stadium. Albee allowed only three hits while walking two and striking out six for Norwich (21-23).

    NECBL

    • The Sanford Mainers swept a doubleheader from the Mystic Schooners in the NECBL. Sanford (16-16) won the opener 2-1 and rolled to a 4-0 win in the nightcap. The Schooners (18-14) scored their lone run in the sixth inning when Eddie Micheletti (George Washington) singled and scored on a double by Mason LaPlante (Georgia). Micheletti and Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) each had a double in the second game.

    Pro boxing

    • New London’s Cassius Cheney will be on the card when CES Boxing hosts Summer Heat on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. Chaney, a 6-foot-6 heavyweight and former basketball star at Old Saybrook High School and the University of New Haven, is 21-1 with 14 knockouts. He will headline a card that includes Juisseppe Cusumano, unbeaten super middleweight Francis Hogan (11-0, 10 KOs) and the return on New London female featherweight Shelly Vincent.
