Local roundup: Schooners’ Ferrer named NECBL All-Star starter

The Mystic Schooners’ Kevin Ferrer was named a Southern Division starter for the 2022 New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game on Sunday.

The game will be played on Sunday, July 24 at The Shark Tank on Martha’s Vineyard with a Home Run Derby at 2 p.m. and the All-Star game at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for reserved grandstand, $10 for general admission and $5 for children.

Ferrer, an outfielder, is a Stonington High School and UConn graduate. He was one of six Mystic players chosen for the game, but the only starter.

Ferrer will be joined by pitcher Reid Easterly (Yale), catcher Addison Kopack (Rhode Island), first baseman Eddie Micheletti (George Washington), shortstop Logan Allen (Bryant) and outfielder Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac).

There were 29 players selected both the Northern and Southern Division rosters with a 30th player to be added by a fan voter later this week.

Later Sunday, the Schooners defeated the Valley Blue Sox 4-1 as Micheletti hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield) added some insurance with a two-run single in the ninth.

Hector Alejandro (UConn) earned the win for Mystic (20-14), scattering five hits with five strikeouts over six innings, while Wheeler’s Bowen Baker (Fairfield) pitched two scoreless innings and Ledyard’s Ken Turner (Bryant) earned his first save by pitching a scoreless ninth.

    FCBL

    • The Pittsfield Suns broke open a close game with four runs in the ninth on the way to a 6-1 win over the Norwich Sea Unicorns in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game at Dodd Stadium. CJ Willis (Western New England) went 2-for-3 with a triple for the Sea Unicorns (22-24), who scored their only run on an RBI single by Ryan Hyde (UConn) in the first.

    Section 3 LL softball (8-10)

    • District 10 champion East Lyme/Salem’s season came to an end in the Connecticut Section 3 Little League softball tournament final, losing to Madison 14-3 in Rocky Hill.

East Lyme/Salem advanced to the final with a 14-5 winner over West Hartford. In that game, Brooke Lloyd had two hits and winning pitcher Mikaela Richter went the distance and struck out seven.

    State American Legion baseball

    • Anthony Jessuck pitched a complete game two-hitter as top-seeded Waterford advanced to the championship round of the Connecticut American Legion Northern Bracket Pod C tournament with a 1-0, eight-inning win over No. 2 Bristol

Waterford (23-3) will host the winner of Tuesday’s losers’ bracket final between Bristol and No. 4 Enfield in Wednesday’s championship round at 4 p.m. with a second game, if necessary, to follow.

Jessuck struck out eight and earned the win when Preston Tabor hit a solo homer in the eight. Tabor went 2-for-4.

    ECML

    • The Clippers rallied for five runs in the seventh and tied the Padres 6-6 in an ECML game at Bidwell field that was suspended after nine innings. It will be concluded when the teams meet later in July. Anthony Franco’s two-run homer was the key hit of that inning for the Clippers. Robbie DelaCruz had a single and double, Andrew Fogarty two hits and Chris Ouellette and Brandon Valentin each doubles for the Padres.
