    Local roundup: Dave Jones qualifies for U.S. Senior Amateur tournament

    Old Lyme ― Playing Monday at Black Hall Club, Norwich’s Dave Jones earned medalist honors and one of three qualifying spots for the 67th U.S. Senior Amateur golf tournament.

    Jones, the reigning Dick Siderowf Player of the Year, played well in the rainy conditions, firing the only under-par round of the day with a 1-under 70. His round included an eagle on the par-5 second hole and, following a double-bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 4, he recovered with a dominating back-nine that included birdies on hole Nos. 11, 12, 14 and 16.

    The U.S. Senior Amateur will be held Aug. 27-Sept. 1 at The Kittansett Club in Marion, Massachusetts.

    Jones will be joined by Eric Ashworth of Orange, who finished at even-par 71, and Robert Moriarty of Fairfield, who shot a 1-over 72 to earn the final qualifying berth.

    Wojick joins Yale coaching staff

    • Chris Wojick, a Montville High School graduate, is leaving Eastern Connecticut State University to become pitching coach at Yale University. Wojick will be joining former ECSU head coach Brian Hamm, who was named Yale’s new head coach after leading the Warriors to NCAA Division III national championship last month.

    "Chris Wojick is one of the bright pitching minds in college baseball," Hamm said in a release. "He is an innovator in the areas of pitcher development, arm care and pitch-calling, which combined with his ability to identify talent and inspire players has resulted in remarkable success of pitchers at the collegiate and professional levels. Chris embodies the passion, drive, and character that our players aspire toward, and I am excited for him to join our winning culture"

    Wojick was ECSU’s associate head coach in 2022 and its pitching coach since 2018. His Eastern pitching staff led NCAA Division III in ERA (2.91) and was among the national leaders in a number of other categories.

    "Coach Hamm and I have been together for four years and had a ton of success at ECSU," Wojick said. "We work great together and I am really excited to join his staff at Yale.“

    • The Newport Gulls improved to 24-11 by outlasting the Mystics Schooners 3-2 in a matinee at Dodd Stadium. Mystic (20-15) scored both of its runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac), while Mason LaPlante (Georgia) had a pair of singles.

    Mystic’s Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield) and Bristol’s Ben Huber (UConn will participate in the NECBL Home Run Derby on Sunday as part of the NECBL All-Star festivities at The Shark Tank on Martha’s Vineyard. Pagliarini is tied for the team lead with three. The HR Derby starts at 2 p.m. with the All-Star Game following at 4:30.

    Section 3 LL baseball (10-12)

    • District 10 champion East Lyme defeated Cromwell 10-1 in the opening round of the Connecticut Section 3 Little League (10-12) tournament at Madison. East Lyme will play the host team at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and can clinch the top seed and a spot in Friday’s sectional final with a win. Cooper Siragusa went 3-for-3 wth a home run to lead the East Lyme offense while Kyle Cellemme added two hits and Siragusa, Jake Palermo and Wyatt Farrior combined to pitch a four-hitter.
