    Local roundup: Fairfield American beats East Lyme in state Little League tourney

    East Lyme — Fairfield American advanced to the championship round of the Connecticut Little League (10-12) baseball tournament with a 10-2 victory over East Lyme on Thursday night.

    East Lyme drops to the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will play an elimination game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Manchester, an 8-3 winner over Shelton in the second game Thursday night.

    The East Lyme-Manchester winner will play Fairfield American on Saturday at 7 p.m., and must be Fairfield twice. A deciding game, if necessary, will be played on Sunday, also at 7 p.m.

    State LL baseball (8-10)

    • East Lyme kept its hopes alive in the Connecticut Little League (8-10) tournament in Fairfield, defeating Avon 11-6 in an elimination game. East Lyme will play Hamden, a 10-9 loser to South Windsor, in the losers’ bracket final on Friday at 5:45 p.m., with Friday’s winner advancing to Saturday’s championship round against South Windsor.

    NECBL

    • The Mystic Schooners lost to the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 5-3 in 11 innings in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at Dodd Stadium. The Schooners (22-19) played the Newport Gulls in the night game. Pawcatuck’s Kevin Ferrer (UConn) was 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored and Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) had a double for Mystic.

    College football

    • UConn running back Robert Burns has been named to the watch list for the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy, college football’s premier award for community service. The trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.

    Burns (Miami, Fla.), a UConn graduate student pursuing his master’s degree in business administration, played in 10 games for the Huskies last year, rushing for 45 yards and returning three kicks for 58 yards.

    Off the field, Burns is the co-founder of Second Spoon, a non-profit organization that provides excess food from college dining halls to those in need. He is one of 115 college players on the watch list. The award winner will be announced on Dec. 8, and the the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on February 24, 2023.
