Local roundup: Schooners earn berth in NECBL playoffs

South Kingstown, R.I. ― The Mystic Schooners rallied to beat the Ocean State Waves 8-7 in 10 innings on Saturday night, earning a spot in the New England Collegiate Baseball League playoffs in their final regular season game.

The No. 5 Schooners (23-21) open the playoffs on Monday at No. 4 Martha’s Vineyard in a single-elimination game. Mystic scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7 and took the lead with a run in the top of the 10th.

Former Ledyard standout Ken Turner (Bryant) went the final three innings to pick up the win. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning. Mystic qualified for the playoffs for the ninth straight season, the longest active streak in the league.

Ben Metzner (Yale) started the top of the 10th on second base, advanced to third on a flyout by Pawcatuck’s Kevin Ferrer (UConn) and scored the go-ahead run on a groundout by Addison Kopack (Rhode Island).

Kopack also started the ninth-inning rally with a two-run homer. Ocean State issued three walks and, with two outs, Jackson DeJohn (St. Bonaventure) hit a pinch-hit, two-run single and the game-tying run scored when there was a throwing error on the play.
