    Local roundup: Clippers capture 2022 ECML championship

    Groton — Lelo Martinez and Al-Jordan Johnson had three hits apiece as the Clippers won the 2022 Eastern Connecticut Major League baseball championship on Thursday night with a 6-2 win over the Sonics at Bidwell Field.

    The Clippers swept the best-of-three series from the reigning champions, winning both games be the same score.

    Martinez had two doubles and Jordan Johnson one for the Clippers, who had 16 hits, while Sean Porter and Alex Delcampo each added a pair of hits.

    Tyler Perkins allowed just one hit over five innings to earn the win and the Clippers turned three double plays, including an unassisted one by Jordan Johnson in the seventh when the Sonics had two runners on base with no outs.

    Dan Pierce had a pair of singles for the Sonics while Juan Cruz had a double and Anthony Carambot drove in a run.

    • Pawcatuck’s Kevin Ferrer (UConn) was the Mystic Schooners’ lone representative on the 2022 New England Collegiate Baseball League all-league first team, while Mystic had three players make the second team and two more earn honorable mention honors.

    Ferrer finished with a .354 batting average for Mystic, tops on the team and fifth in the NECBL. He finished with 51 hits, 26 runs, 27 RBI, four home runs and eighth doubles, and finished with a .391 on-base percentage.

    Catcher Addison Kopack (Rhode Island), starting pitcher Jonathan Gonzalez (Stetson) and relief pitcher Reid Easterly (Yale) made the second team while shortstop Mason LaPlante (Georgia) and outfield Anthony D’Onofrio (Quinnipiac) were honorable mention picks.
