Local roundup: Coast Guard volleyball sweeps Mitchell in season opener
New London — Sophomore Shannon Shaw and freshman Sarah Somer each had seven kills as the Coast Guard Academy swept Mitchell College 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 Thursday in the season opener for both volleyball teams.
Noelle Tursky had 10 digs for Coast Guard.
Mitchell erased an eight-point deficit in Game 1 and cut the Bears lead to 23-20. Coast Guard then won the next two points and the game.
The Mariners kept up the pace to begin the second set, building a 7-2 lead, which led to a Coast Guard timeout. The Bears rallied, with the lead changing multiple times over the next few minutes. The score settled at 16-16, before Coast Guard scored seven consecutive points to gain control, pulling away.
The Bears led the third game 20-17 when they scored three straight points to pull away for the victory.
Coast Guard is back in action Friday in the Plattsburgh tournament, taking on Plattsburgh at 6 p.m. and St. Michael's at 8.
Men’s soccer
• Mitchell lost to Suffolk 2-1 after an own goal at 81:23 in the season-opener for both teams. Brady Sorensen scored for Suffolk (1-0) and Miguel Varela had the assist. Nolan Clack scored an unassisted goal at 81:14 for Mitchell.
Women’s soccer
• Erina Ismaili and Bridget Rosikiewicz both scored for Albertus Magus as it shut out Mitchell 2-0 in the season opener for both teams. Gemma Landry had 17 saves for Mitchell.
