    H.S. cross country roundup: Bulldogs open with a sweep

    Stonington — Ryan Spellman finished fourth overall in 21 minutes, 29 seconds to lift the Lyman Memorial High School boys’ cross country team to a pair of victories Wednesday at Stonington. Lyman topped Stonington 25-30 and Killingly 20-39.

    Stonington’s Ryan Gruczka won the individual race in 16:39 and teammate Brady deCastro was second in 19:59 as the Bears lost to Killingly on a tiebreaker after the two teams tied 28-28.

    Lyman runners finished fourth through ninth, with Spellman followed by Ryan Dungan, Hunter Sanchez, Kyle Franchi, Oliver Gatti and Maxwell Ponte.

    In other meets:

    • Bacon Academy’s Ryan Moores finished first in 17:33, while Ledyard’s Hayden Baber took second (a personal best 17:48) and Fitch’s Ryan Dunning was third (17:53) in a meet hosted by Ledyard. Ledyard beat Bacon 22-35 and defeated Fitch 22-33. Bacon also downed Fitch 26-29.

    • Michael Strain placed second (16:34) and Lucas Strain was fourth (17:22), leading Griswold to victories over Waterford (15-40) and Woodstock (26-30). Woodstock also beat Waterford (22-35). Woodstock’s Christian Menounous took first in 16:28.

    Girls

    • Ledyard runners finished first through fifth, as the Colonels beat Bacon Academy 15-40 and Fitch 15-50. Kate Littler won the race in 20:37, followed by Ella Stephenson, Josie Withbroe, Avery Widlicka and Sam Doran. Tess Matthieu was sixth overall for Bacon and Ava Kennedy was eighth for Fitch.

    • Lyman Memorial freshman Hazel DeLucia finished first in 21:18 in a tri-meet with Stonington and Killingly. Peyton Vanderstreet was second in 22:45 and Molly Musselman fifth in 24:21 to lead Stonington past Killingly (21-34) and Lyman (15-50). Killingly also defeated Lyman 15-50, as Lyman scored just four runners.

    • Waterford’s Avery Maiese finished first in 21:20, as the Lancers beat Griswold 15-50 and lost to Woodstock 20-42. Woodstock also beat Griswold 15-50. Madison LaForte was eighth for Waterford.
