    New-look Ledyard beats Griswold/Wheeler 37-13

Griswold — It’s been a season of transition thus far for Ledyard.

The Colonels have a new lead back in their triple option scheme (senior fullback James Green).

Classmate Jackson Poulton has taken over at quarterback.

Ledyard is putting up points despite all the changes, however.

Senior Jacob Lenz and Green both scored twice and Poulton threw two touchdown passes as the Colonels downed Griswold/Wheeler 37-17 on Friday night.

Ledyard (2-0) has already scored 96 points this year.

“It’s been awesome,” third-year Ledyard head coach Mike Serricchio said. “It’s just a great group. Fifty unbelievable citizens. Great kids. Not a bad apple in the bunch. (There’s) a lot of young guys learning how to work hard and what that means to be consistent, but the senior group we have, man, they’re an unbelievable crew.”

Green ran 14 times for 84 yards and a touchdown, scored on an 80-yard interception return and ran for two conversions.

Lenz scored Ledyard’s first touchdown on a 65-yard run, caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Poulton and also ran in a conversion.

“James gets a lot of shine and he will continue to do so,” Serricchio said, “but you will continue to hear Jacob Lenz’s name, too. Unbelievable athlete. Ball skills, Toughness. Two-way player.

“Watching him grow from the kid in seven-on-seven (games during the 2020 pandemic season). … to now him making one-handed catches and breaking free for big touchdowns, super proud of him, man.”

Poulton completed all three of his passes for 94 yards with two touchdowns, the second to junior Jaxon Barboza (43 yards).

Senior Roman Streckfuss, sophomore Anthony Adamick and freshman Calvin Casavant all had interceptions for Ledyard. Streckfuss also had a sack, senior Jaden Tetlow had another and senior Liam Stahlbush and sophomore Brian Johnson each had fumble recoveries.

“(I’m) very, very, very, very lucky to have the seniors that I have this year,” Serricchio said. “Their talents have been on display these last two weeks and will continue to do so. I love this group.”

Sophomore Joshua Turner ran nine times for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Wolverines (1-1) and freshman Nicholas Watters scored on a 10-yard run. Also, junior KinKade Rubino caught four passes for 66 yards and senior Logan Davis recovered a fumble.

The Wolverines scored first on their second possession as Turner took a handoff up the middle on third-and-3 for a 65 yard TD with 4:20 left in the first quarter.

Ledyard answered in one play. Lenz took a toss from Poulton to the right and ran for a 65-yard touchdown. Green ran in the conversion to put the Colonels ahead, 8-7.

Ledyard scored late in the first half even after two successive penalties put it in a first-and-20 at its own 47.

Green ran 22 yards for a first down on third-and-14 down to the Wolverines 30. He ran 21 yards on third-and-7 to the Griswold 6. He followed with a touchdown run and added the conversion to extend the Colonels lead to 16-7 with 3:01 remaining in the half.

Ledyard began piling on the points late in the third quarter. Green intercepted a pass on the right side of the field at the Colonels’ 20, cut across the field and went the distance to give his team a 24-7 lead with 5:13 left in the quarter.

“I just read the quarterback’s eyes,” Green said. “The quarterback’s eyes will tell you where he’s going. I read his eyes and he threw it right two me and I just ran.”

Stahlbush recovered a fumble at the Wolverines’ 36. Poulton threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Lenz on the next play to put Ledyard ahead, 30-6, with 4:11 left in the third.

Barboza scored on his 43-yard catch on the first play of the fourth quarter.
